"Candy canes" in Langsam and Mitchell's Salon

12/12/2012

I haven't been very good about keeping up with my blog posts... I'll try to stay on top of that. So now I have a lot of updates on the project:

So last Monday, Denise, Sara, and I went out to pass out what were originally supposed to be candy canes but were really little peppermints (I went to CVS and couldn't find the mini candy canes I was looking for...) to students studying for their exams in Langsam.

It was a huge success and it wasn't at the same time.

All of the students were so happy for the small, kind gesture. They're exhausted and stressed and a little peppermint cheered them up a little bit. So in that way, it was successful. On the other hand, no one registered to donate their hair...

But it accomplished our main goal which was to bring attention to the event.

In other news, Mitchell's Salon has agreed to provide stylists for our event! Possibly even exclusively... we'll know by January 18 (that's my birthday! that would be a great present) if enough stylists are interested in helping to allow for exclusive rights.

It was really very lucky that I even reached them. I sent in a message through their generic contact form on their website asking if they would be interested, and it got passed along to their marketing director who contacted me! So that was very exciting.

Stylist recruitment - part 1

12/1/2012

Today was the first day of stylist recruitment! Unfortunately, only one other person besides Denise, Sara, and myself showed up. And that was Susan, our treasurer. So rounding up the numbers was unsuccessful.

However, the actual stylist recruitment was pretty successful! We covered the Hyde Park/Rookwood/Oakley area and heard some positive feedback from a couple of salons. There were two salons who were very interested so I'm excited to see how much they can help.

We still have another round of recruitment to go so I'll have to schedule that soon.

Leadership focus

I'm struggling with the leadership portion of this event, mostly because I don't feel like I have anyone to lead or to coach! There were many interested people who came to the meeting but they don't actually want to help. I sent out a message asking if anyone was interested in taking a leadership role so I could help them with that, but I haven't gotten a response. It's not enough to just hold meetings to make announcements... if people are really that interested, they can just read an email. I think I won't have meetings unless there is something to do at the meeting, like color fliers or post them around campus, or pass out candy canes in Langsam. Actually, that's exactly what I'll do. Our next meeting will be Monday, December 10 and it will just be us going around passing out candy canes and information.
